Subject: Looking for 5 volt fans

Hello,
I am looking for fans to cool down optical elements.
I want to use low voltage : something like 4 to 6 volts.
This turns out to be a problem, because it seems like all fans use 12V DC.
But i also heard of fancy looking cooling pads for notebooks, which are USB-connected and use 3V. (by using 2 80mm fans or 4 60mm fans).

Can anybody tell me where I can purchase these kind of fans (without the designlike package which is useless for me) .

Thank you very much
Harro

Hi,

5V fans are commonly available, especially in smaller sizes (e.g. 40mm). Don't look at shops specialized in _PC_ cooling; in that area, mostly 12V fans can be found. You should be able to get 5V fans at generic electronics retailers, such as Radio Shack.

Or try a specialized online shop, like here:

I have reviewed A&P products in the past, and they turned out to be of good quality.

Hi,

no, that's not related - according to my experience, 12V fans will run fine at 7V, but not at 5V. Even those 12V fans who will start spinning at 5V will provide very bad performance and possibly bad reliability.
