Hey guys...

ok... basically my computer has been resetting itself of late... randomly... at first i thought it was a soundcard problem... but i eventually workd out that that wasnt it (tested the onboard sound and it worked... and then computer reset when no sound was being used... )

but basically... i'm thinking that the reason for the problem is due to the temperature my CPU runs at... basically.. when i boot up.. the cpu is running at 54ish degrees... but when i start running anything... i.e currently with one browser window open... and nothing else.. it is running at 66 degrees... and with more programs open - it just keeps going up... to the 70's... and higher... i assume that the times when i had a restart... the cpu was running really hot... (its warm where i live... does that matter?) ... and hence i got the restarts...

i have a 3 year old system -

Athlon xp 1800... with the stock fan and heatsink (no artic gel or anything).... no case fan ..
and the normal things... video card (with its own fan)... creative sound card... then i have a few other cards.. network... a pci usb card... ( i can go into more detail on that if needed)...

anyhow...
i have NEVER cleaned out the dust etc from the system... which i'm planning to do this weekend (with some compressed air etc...)

do you guys have any suggestions as to how i can improve my cpu temperature... as far as i know its been running like this for 3 years without a problem until recently.... so i dont really want to spend a LOT of money on it... because it will probably be up for replacing with a new system fairly soon....

also... i'm not sure if there is a mounting for a case fan on the system... but i will check that out just after i've typed this message (so i can turn of the pc...)

and althouhg this is a stupid question - shoudl i be keeping my computer close to the wall or further out.. will that help airflow at all?

have fun guys
and thanks
vinay

THE TEMPS YOU STATED ARE TOO HIGH TO AFFECT THE LIFE OF THE COMPONENTS E.G. HDD,MOTHERBOARD.THE PROCESSOR IS GOING TO BE LEAST AFFECTED.

DO THE FOLLOWING:

1.CHECK THE HEAT SINK AND THE THERMAL PASTE.IF WORN OUT,REAPPLY AND REFIX THE PROCESSOR.

2. OPEN THE POWER SUPPLY FAN AND CLEAN THE DUST ACCUMULATED THERE USING COMPRESSED AIR etc.

3. INSTALL ANOTHER CASE FAN ON THE FRONT SIDE WHICH SUCKS FRESH AIR IN.THE EXISTING FAN WILL BE THROWING WARM AIR OUTSIDE.CLOSE REMAINING AIR VENTS TO ENSURE PROPER VENTILLATION.
4. ALWAYS KEEP UR PC AT SOME DISTANCE FROM THE WALLS AN D ALLOW PROPER AIR CIRCULATION.

5. I HAVE PUT SOME WATER IN A STRONG PLASTIC BAG AND PUT OVER THE CASE SURROUNDING ITS TOP AND SIDES.IT COOLS DOWN THE PC WELL.

6. APART FROM THAT DONT PUT ANY BOOKS PAPERS ETC OVER THE CASE AS IT BEING POOR CONDUCTOR OF HEAT DOESNT ALLOW THE HEAT TO BE ;PROPERLY DISSIPATED.

HOPE IT SOLVES UR PROBLEM.
