hi, i have a compaq 5330us desktop and have had problems with slowing down of comp to the point that even the clock on the taskbar falls behind significantly. i've noticed that the fan inside the computer (ive been told its the processor cooling fan) is noisy and runs rough and that it seems to get stuck and thats when i have the problems with my computer. it twitches like its trying to spin but wont always start on its own, if i touch it to get it started then it spins and my comp starts to run normally again. also, i've opened the task manager and noticed that after a while that the fan stops running the cpu usage gets to 100% and just stays there and thats when my comp slows down, when i get the fan to run again it goes back down to almost 0% and comp works fine. ive cleaned the fan, it had alot of dust, helped a lot but fan still gets stuck at times and problem with comp returns. i've talked to compaq and was told by them that i have to buy a whole new motherboard to replace the fan thats attached to the processor thats attached to the motherboard. what i would like to know since i really think its just the fan itself that is bad.......and that compaq just wants to sell me a motherboard and a processor, cant i just replace the fan instead of replacing 100s of dollars of parts? i would appreciate any info, thanks in advance and sorry for the long post.

yes you can just change the fan, but you probably would want to just upgrade the heatsink and fan, depending on the processor type, you can get some good heatsinks for about 20 to 30 dollars.
