Set up a new sys. Had sink/fan combo on not quite right. Loud fan noises, shut er down. Tried 1, 2, or 3 X's. Now, no power up at all. Checked power supply, seems ok, CPU smells fried. Any ideas?
Athlon on K7 (Athlon rated) board, Had to do a little work to power supply, but pretty sure that wasn't really the prob. Got boot for a few, but fan making so much noise, I stopped right away. Took 3 X's for me to realise it wasn't on right.
Any help would be great.
Thanx!

Hi,

the older Athlon CPUs (unlike the new Athlon 64) do not have a thermal protection circuit. If the CPU was not in proper contact with the heatsink, the CPU will die within seconds (sorry to say). If you are lucky, at least the motherboard survived.

If only the fan was off, but the heatsink itself was installed properly, the CPU normally won't be damaged.

bye,
Till
