I have a P4 2.4Ghz Processor. I seems to heat up to about 65 degrees while playing games like Halo or Swat. Other wise it stays at about 36 degrees. Once i removed the graphite sheet provoided in the CPU box and applied thermal paste. I was able to bring the idle temp down to 28 degrees but a chip on the motherboard overheated and failed. I got the motherboard replaced and since the graphite sheet was used again for the heatsink the idle temp became 38 degrees. I installed a fan for cooling the case and a miniature fan to cool ICH4 IC with the passive heatsink. I am thinking of applying heat sink compound and adding a high speed fan right on top of the CPU cooling fan, would it help?

Yeah, it would, use arctic silver IV its good for that. Mind your if your temps are fine (under 65c load) then i wouldn't bother
